Installing an Azek or Cedar Lantern Post Sleeve

To install a lantern post sleeve, you'll need to purchase the following items locally:

  • A galvanized steel pipe (foundation post)
  • 2 bags of Quikrete (concrete)
  • Flathead screws

Step 1: Set Up the Foundation Post

  • Secure the galvanized steel pipe (foundation post) approximately 36" into the ground using 2 bags of Quikrete. Ensure it is stable and level.

Step 2: Install the Lantern Post Sleeve

  • Slide the lantern post sleeve over the foundation post.
  • Drill pilot holes to avoid splitting and secure the sleeve in place using flathead screws.

Foundation Post Size Guide:

  • For 6x6 Cedar Fluted Lantern Post Sleeve: Use a galvanized steel pipe with an outer diameter up to 3”. The sleeve has a 3-1/8" x 3-1/8" inside opening.
  • For 6x6 Azek Post Sleeve: Use a galvanized steel pipe with an outer diameter up to 3-5/8"). The sleeve has a 3-3/4” x 3-3/4” inside opening.
  • For 8x8 Azek Post Sleeve: Use a galvanized steel pipe with an outer diameter of up to 5-1/4". The sleeve has a 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" inside opening.
  • For 8x8 Cedar Fluted or Raised Panel Lantern Post Sleeve: Use a galvanized steel pipe with an outer diameter of up to 3-7/8". The sleeve has a 4" x 4" inside opening.

Alternative Foundation Post: You can opt for a pressure-treated wood post for 6x6 or 8x8 Azek and 8x8 cedar post sleeves. Refer to the outer dimensions listed above.

Finial Post Cap Drilled On

Step 3: Attach the Finial Post Cap

  • Screw the lantern receptacle post cap in place instead of gluing it. This allows for easy removal if necessary.

Caulking Lantern Post Base

Step 4: Seal the Base

  • Use quality caulk to seal the base of the post. This prevents moisture and pests from entering.
  • Apply a coat of acrylic latex paint to protect and enhance the finish.
